I’ve started work on … something. I think I know what it’s going to end up being in the end, but it’s still in the super-early stages and still being shaped

So of course one of the first steps is to start a Tumblr for it! Consider Drawing Style to be a place for notes, bookmarks and miscellany related to this thing.

It’s going to be fun. Maybe. It is so far.

I am watching Shut Up and Play the Hits and so I’m now plotting to move to wherever James Murphy lives so we can be besties. I have some cool records we can listen to while we play with his dog.

I’m not a huge LCD Soundsystem fan (I like them, though), quite a bit) but I dare you to watch this documentary and not decide that you don’t want Murphy to be your new best friend.

So a few weeks back we informally dropped that Heidi MacDonald of The Beat had generously offered her minicomics collection to SPX as a contribution to the Small Press Expo Permanent Collection at the Library of Congress.

Well it’s time to start sharing some of this cool stuff with you, all of which will be documented and accessible for all time at the LOC - forever preserving these independent voices in comics and cartooning.

Three great books start us off, including circa 2000 work from Craig Thompson, Dave Roman, Jason Ho, Jeff Zornow and Matt Feazell!

Hey, it’s another Near Miss post!

Things that didn’t quite make it in: My mom was (and is!) a very fashionable woman. She was a dressmaker for 20 years and made a lot of her own clothes (and mine!). They were always awesome. She was (and is!) a smart and independent woman. So I grew up never thinking there was much of a difference between being into clothes and fashion and also being a strong woman. To me, they went together nicely.

Mostly, like what you like! The fashion industry has issues, yeah, but there’s nothing wrong with liking clothes and wanting to look good! There’s also nothing wrong with not really caring about that. There’s room for all of it.

Sometimes you’re just having one of those days where you go “You know what? I’m just going to put I Capture the Castle on repeat and be done with it.”

You know that thing where you tell people what your favorite movie is but it’s really something else? Well, I tell people my favorite movie is Wong Kar-Wai’s Ashes of Time but my favorite movie is probably I Capture the Castle.

Well, they’re both my favorite movies, really. I love Ashes of Time. But I Capture the Castle forever and always.

I watched Rosemary’s Baby tonight because I hadn’t seen it and my mom recommended it (stop laughing!). I think Roman Polanski is a pretty terrible human being but a good director so I feel extremely conflicted about his work, but I am really happy I finally watched this.

Anyway, I once made a mix CD where I inappropriately put this song after another song that was really sort of serious and depressing. I do stuff like that less and less now, thankfully.

I was warned that there was a lot of Ignatz submissions waiting for me. I hadn’t picked them up in a few weeks so I figured that was expected.

I’m pretty sure all of this right here is more than we got last year. That’s not including the ~100ish titles we received previously.

I thought this photo was going to be a little misleading since there’s a chair and such behind this stack, but if anything, I don’t think it quite does justice to that this is a ridiculous amount of comics.

I’m glad this is a three-day weekend.

You have until May 31 to submit (we need them by June 7). At least the end is near.
